Preface

We recorded thoroughly the opinion of Emha Ainun Nadjib, a respected cultural observer in Indonesia, concerning East Java mudflow problems. Unfortunately, the articles published by two different newspapers, i.e. Koran Tempo dated July 13, 2007 and Surya July 14, 2007. If we accidentally read one of the articles, particularly the first published by Koran Tempo, almost possible to get a different impression compared to if we both read or read the latest one published by Surya, at least.

In the last few days, Emha became a very important informal mediator as he directly met the 3 of 4 prominent parties concerned with the East Java hot mud disaster, that is 16 peoples representing the victims, President SBY and Nirwan Bakrie in three different time. On June 22 (or before), Emha met the victims representative. On June 24, he met President SBY and he met Nirwan Bakrie on July 12 afternoon.

Our assessment to both articles written in 2 different nuances is as follow: On July 12 (at morning or at noon) Emha sent the first article to Koran Tempo and then published on July 13. On July 12 (at afternoon), 2007 Emha met Nirwan Bakrie and he received new information from Nirwan. After Emha read his articles in Koran Tempo, Emha needed to clarify some point written in his first article (published by Koran Tempo) according to his meeting with Nirwan.

The article was ready on July 13 after Maghrib (around 18.30) and then he sent the article to Surya editorial that published the article on July 14, morning. There is another possibility, Emha offered the second article to Koran Tempo but refused and finally he sent it to Surya.

In addition, Koran Tempo is a newspaper with national circulation that tends negative press for Lapindo and the Government concerning the East Java mudflow case. In the other side, Surya is an East Java local newspaper generally put his position to plead the victims, sometimes Surya published a neutral or positive press for Lapindo and the Government.

What we explained above purely our interpretation to the finding. Of course the only one knows is Emha himself. It is our pleasure to have correction from Emha directly here if our interpretation regarding the chronology mistaken.

1. Part 1, Koran Tempo July 13, 2007
2. Part 2, Surya July 14, 2007
