Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Oil and gas drilling company PT Lapindo Brantas said that up till Sunday (Apr 22) it had spent Rp6.5 billion in funds to compensate victims of the uncontrollable mudflow in Sidoardjo district in East Java. Thereby PT Lapindo had met part of the mudflow victims` demand for compensation, the company said in a statement made available to ANTARA News here Tuesday.

It said more than 1,000 mudflow victims held a thanksgiving mass prayer service at Agung Sidoardjo mosque Sunday morning after they had received part of their compensation money.

Sujari, one of the mudflow victims, said the mass prayer service was held to express gratitude that the government had agreed to pay 20 percent of their material losses in advance.

The hazardous mudflow had inundated many residential areas, factories, schools and other public facilities as well as paddy fields in Sidoardjo district after a drilling accident that occurred at a Lapindo oil and gas drilling site in Sidoardjo in late May 2006.
